You might be thinking of changing careers because of dissatisfaction with your current job. Maybe you've outgrown your role at your company or reached the highest level possible for someone with your skills and experience. Maybe what used to satisfy you at work no longer does. Regardless of the reason, the idea of beginning a job search or changing careers may feel a little overwhelming, especially if you haven't searched for a job in years.

To increase your chances of a successful at a career change, there are three tips you should follow. Keep in mind that changing careers probably isn't going to be easy, but the more you know about yourself and the job market, the better equipped you are to make that change.

1. Understanding Satisfaction

You first want to ask yourself why you're dissatisfied. Is it because you don't like what you're doing? Are you bored? Do you not like your co-workers? There could be one main reason or several small reasons why you're thinking of changing careers. Think about whether or not you've gotten everything out of your current job that you want, and consider what might be missing. Then, make a list of the things you want to do but never pursued. Maybe you've always worked in the business sector but are interested in teaching. Does your experience in business give you the knowledge that's necessary to teach business classes? It's important to get clear about why you want to change careers before making a move.

2. Using the Internet and Other Resources

Use technology to see what's out there, and use social media platforms to connect with employers. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, and if you don't have one, create one right away. Begin networking with others in your desired industry by joining industry organizations and online groups. Read trade magazines and consider posting to blogs to get your name out there. Learn as much as you can about the job you want before making the change. If you haven't updated your resume in a while, look at resume samples on popular career websites to gain some inspiration. Learn the tricks and tips that can help make your resume stand out, and apply them wherever you can.

3. Remain Focused and Persistent

You might not land the first new job you apply for, but don't get discouraged. If you're passionate about changing careers, keep pursuing a new job until you achieve success. To boost your chances, display your enthusiasm about the position, and be persistent by following up after each step of the hiring process.

Changing careers doesn't have to be a scary experience. Determine what's most important to you in a career, take advantage of tools like LinkedIn to streamline the job search process, and be persistent in your quest to move forward in your career field.
